Two years ago, my wife and I were at the airport and I was sketching while waiting for our plane. This guy nearby notices and asks if I'm an artist. I say yes and show him the sketches, he says 'me too' and introduces himself as Mike. I instantly like him. We talk awhile about the joys and challenges of drawing and drawing for a living. When he mentions he likes drawing comics, I ask what he's drawn and he mentions 'Witchblade, Fathom..' I said 'wait; Mike ..Turner?' 'yeah' he says. I start laughing. This unassuming guy was big shot artist Michael Turner, president of Aspen comics. When our plane got in, he came over to say he enjoyed meeting me and said goodbye. A few days later he sent a nice e-mail saying he had gone to my site, and loved my art and to stay in touch. I had intended to, but I'm very sad to say I didn't.
Last night, after a long battle with cancer, Mike Turner died. And even though I only had the one conversation with him, I'm broken hearted.
Wieringo, Dave Stevens, John Alvin, Stan Winston and now Mike Turner. It's a rough year for the artist community.

"Your soul is a beautiful thing, child" replied the grave man's voice, "and I thank you. No emperor recevied so fair a gift the angels wept tonight."
Mangos...mangos...mangos...any mangos to sell?
Damn.
Just as we were packing up and leaving for the day, I passed the Aspen booth and saw Michael Turner still sitting there, with a much, much smaller crowd around him. So. . . carpe diem and all. . . I dashed to the table and said, "Mr. Turner, sir, would you sign this for my penciler? She loves your work."
Well, he was tickled to no end about being called "Mr. Turner" and one of the fellows sitting with him teased him about it. He chuckled and signed the comic without complaint and was, all in all, the nicest, most down-to-earth "major" artist I'd ever had the chance to talk to. I'm very saddened to see the comics community has lost such a talented, unassuming man.

Live for today, because tomorrow is not guaranteed...
I am so sorry, he personally sounded like a great guy.
And thanks for mentioning Stan Winston.
The world seems to ignore him as an artist, but
he was an inspiration for me, and I was shocked when he died.

Then be sure to celebrate the accomplishments of those lost, and how they may have touched your life even in the most remote way, with the work of their minds, and of their hearts. Reflect with a warm smile, and hold your own life more dear, as well as the ones you love. Know with renewed certainty that all life is precious, and that we as creatives are privileged to leave behind a more unique legacy. Celebrate our kindred every day, and rejoice in your place alongside them.
Well said, li'l brother.
